Free workshops to deepen conversations between museums and communities
The Museums Association (MA) is running a series of free workshops across the UK this spring to enable museums to explore and deepen links with community and third sector organisations.

Part of the MA’s pilot Partnerships with Purpose initiative, the four one-day events provide an opportunity for decision-makers in museums and community organisations to identify shared aims and potential ways to work together.

The workshops aim to be fun and interactive, facilitating meaningful relationships that go on to have a lasting impact.

Partnerships with Purpose project officer, Amber Alferoff, said: “There has been a lot of interest in the events already and there’ll be a great mix of organisations attending, including small local charities, social enterprises, and networks linked to culture and health.

“The events will see us match-making people so they can achieve what they want to achieve,  and identify aims that are shared across organisations.”

“The events will complement all the work that has already gone on to bring organisations together – and will really help to link museums to their communities.”

“The workshops will help identify opportunities for local people in museums and opportunities for museums in the community, showing that some of the barriers between sectors are in fact imaginary, ” said Alferoff.

“We are grateful to the Paul Hamlyn Foundation for supporting this project.”

Each event will offer an insight into local need and what the community wants to offer. The Sheffield event, which takes place on 11 February, will be attended by the city’s lord mayor, Magid Magid, who made headlines on his appointment last year as a former refugee who is the city’s first Somali mayor and the youngest person appointed to the role.

In Swansea, attendees will hear expertise on health and the outdoors, culture and social prescribing.

The events are open to decision-makers in tiny, medium and large museums; community and third sector groups and networks; statutory sector staff; councillors and trustees; and funders.

Partnerships with Purpose is sponsored by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation’s Explore and Test fund and will be professionally evaluated.
