Discover how new lighting technology is transforming exhibition design

Programme published for one-day conference on 11 September
The Museums Association has published the programme for a forthcoming one-day conference that will showcase the latest innovations in lighting and share practical case studies of using this technology to create atmospheric and innovative exhibitions.
Taking place on 11 September at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, Bright Ideas: New Perspectives on Museum Lighting offers delegates the chance to hear from a range of lighting experts and put their questions to them in interactive Q&A discussions.
In the morning, Stephen Cannon-Brookes, of Cannon-Brookes Lighting and Design and the Bartlett School of Environment, will examine the benefits and challenges that new developments in lighting technology bring to the sector.
There will also be presentations examining how smart lighting using Bluetooth technology is pushing boundaries when it comes to lighting different spaces and sharing its uses for museums and heritage sites. The impact light has on colour – particularly white – will also be examined.
During the afternoon, delegates will hear case studies from museums. Anna Montgomery, a senior 3D designer at Imperial War Museums, will present on how to use lighting to create atmosphere in exhibitions, using two exhibitions – What Remains and Lest We Forget – as examples.
Alexander Moore, the head of exhibitions at Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, will discuss how a forthcoming Rembrandt exhibition is being used to launch a new Bluetooth lighting system at the gallery, and share the implications this could have on the visitor experience, fundraising and loan standards.
And the Creative Core exhibition designers will share how natural and artificial lighting was used at Bolton Museum’s new Egyptology galleries to emphasis the narrative themes of life and death.
During the lunch, delegates can meet with suppliers and see live demonstrations of lighting technology.
