£100,000 award supports cultural institutions outside London
Six organisations have been shortlisted for the 2019 Freelands Award, which was created to raise the profile of mid-career female artists and support the work of cultural institutions outside London.
The award nominees are:
- First Site, Colchester
- Hepworth Wakefield, Yorkshire
- John Hansard, University of Southampton
- MAC, Belfast
- MK Gallery, Milton Keynes
- Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne
The Freelands Award was established in 2016 by media executive Elisabeth Murdoch, the founder of the Freelands Foundation. The £100,000 prize includes £25,000 for the female artist chosen by the winning organisation. The successful organisation and the artist it selects will be announced in the autumn.
Alongside the award, the Freelands Foundation commissions an annual research report that investigates the representation of female artists in the UK. This year’s report was carried out by Kate McMillan from the Department of Culture, Media and Creative Industries at King's College, London. The gender of gallery and museum directors is among the areas that the report investigates.
