Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) has launched a fund to help museums purchase small items of equipment. Accredited organisations in Scotland with an annual unrestricted expenditure of £30,000 or less can apply for between £150 and £600 from the Purchase Fund for items that assist with museum work, such as audiovisual, environmental monitoring or collections care equipment.

Awards are distributed on a rolling basis and applicants must demonstrate that there is a reasonable need for the item to be bought. Several other deadlines are also approaching for MGS funding streams. The next round of the Museum Development Fund closes on 10 October. The fund provides grants of between £5,000 and £40,000 (up to 75% of the total project costs) for standalone projects designed to make museums more resilient.

This rises to £60,000 and 100% of project costs for organisations that care for Recognised collections. Projects to have recently been funded include a volunteer recruitment and training programme at Glasgow Women’s Library and a digital succession planning initiative at Leisure and Culture Dundee.

The deadline for MGS’s Festivals Fund, meanwhile, is 31 October. Designed to help build local cultural partnerships, the fund supports museums with the cost of staging an event as part of a local or regional festival. Grants of between £300 and £1,500 (up to 75% of project costs) are available to organisations that run Accredited museums.
